Introduction to Meditation
Published 11/4/04

Meditation is a tool for connecting. The most important being that one will connect with in the process of meditating is one’s self. The process of connecting with one’s self helps the physical body to assimilate its own healing abilities by balancing breathing, heart rate, adrenaline and general hormonal flow, and impulses of the central nervous system.

Meditation assists in the process of releasing tension and the accompanying blockages of the emotional body. It also clears the stagnation of thought and perception of the mental body. When allowed, meditation also allows connection to the spiritual body and the vast understanding that exists beyond the five physical senses.

The virtues of meditation for the physical body have been well tested and extolled by modern and ancient medicine. Studies abound which show blood pressure calmed, nervous conditions relieved, and more. These virtues are often extended into the mental body as participants in studies are found to have improved abilities to focus. Emotionally, the release of the physical and mental blockages alone invite emotions to calm.

Where there may be a hang up in the meditation connections lies in the connection to spiritual body. Various disciplines of practice may be applied for use toward the other bodies with relative ease. Taking the body through breathing exercises starts the physical body on its way. Soothing music calls emotions to the journey of connection. A recorded or live directive by a soothing, well-paced voice that evokes images for the mind to wander in become stepping stones to bring the meditator to a wide variety of connections where release and rejuvenation can take place. Most people find these exercises useful and successful. People feel these are practices they can incorporate rather easily. Yet some of those same people will feel they need help, or are unsuccessful with meditation. Are people expecting magic to happen? Are they thinking that meditation is a practice that must be dedicated many hours, days and years to be successful? Must you enter a religious order to master meditation?

Meditation happens at all body levels; physical, mental, emotional, AND spiritual. Look closely and magic is there at all levels. Lowering a heart rate before it manifests into a stroke or heart attack, many times without medications is magic. Finding a solution to a problem that has dogged you for a long time is magic. Letting go of an emotional attack before it manifests as a physical ailment is magic, as is the release of an old attack that has already manifested itself into physical malady.

When we face the connection to the spiritual body, however, the very attempt rides the trails of our belief systems and the limits that the common world imposes. We know how to defend ourselves physically, mentally, and even emotionally. We can call on assistance and concretely track our progress and results. With spiritual beliefs, however, we become uncertain. As much as we believe what we believe, there is this matter of faith that opens doubts and causes confusion as to why everyone doesn’t believe all the same things. It is unsettling. Is this why people feel unsuccessful about meditation? Does this in turn play upon the other bodies, raising doubt through the mind and emotions as to the true attainment or value of meditation?

Makes one want to ponder while sitting by a gentle stream on a comfortably warm day with the sun glistens upon drops of splashed stream water falling on leaves and petals along the bank. Hear the breeze rustle the leaves of the tree overhead and then through the trees in the distance. Smell the warm earth. Taste the apple that has come from the tree nearby. Feel Mother Earth herself gently wrap you in her love and sing you to sleep. It’s okay. Your spirit is already connected.

Come back again for more.

Peace and Love in the Light.
